A man who was stabbed in his home in Long Beach died at a hospital, and a suspect was taken into custody, police said Friday.

Officers were sent to the 800 block of Cherry Avenue about 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

"Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim inside his residence suffering from a stab wound to his upper body," police said in a statement.

"Long Beach Fire Department personnel were on scene rendering medical aid and attempting life saving measures," police said. "The victim was transported to a local hospital ... in stable but critical condition. The victim ultimately succumbed to his injuries."

The fatally wounded man was identified by police as Cristian Varguez, 41, of Long Beach.

While officers were on scene conducting their preliminary investigation, the suspect voluntarily turned himself in at the Long Beach Police Department Public Safety Building.

Jonathan Sandoval, 21, of Long Beach was booked on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $2 million.

"Detectives determined the male adult suspect and two male adult victims were known to each other," police said. "The suspect and victims were involved in a physical altercation inside a residence, which escalated when the suspect later retrieved a knife and a pair of brass knuckles."

While one victim was fatally stabbed, the second victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury, police said.

Detectives will present the case next week to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration, police said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detectives Eric Thai or Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS. Tipsters may also use the website www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
