A Lyft driver said he was beaten and robbed by two passengers Saturday night in San Bernardino.

It reportedly happened in the area of Rialto Avenue and North F Street just before 8 p.m.

The driver, Alberto Avila, told police officers he picked up a man and a woman and an argument ensued. Fearing for his safety, he said he asked the couple to get out of the car which they did.

When he got out to call the police, he said the man punched the phone out his hand before he and the woman stole items from Avila’s pocket. The passengers then beat Avila and ran off, leaving him bloody.

Avila was taken to the hospital where his son said he needed surgery due to the injuries he received in his right eye.

The San Bernardino Police Department is investigating. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the department at (909) 384-5742.
