BELL GARDENS, Calif. (KNX) – A man was hospitalized after he was shot by a sheriff's deputy in the Bell Gardens area Thursday.

It happened during a traffic stop around 4:30 a.m. near Florence and Eastern avenues, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The sheriff's department said a deputy noticed a white utility vehicle doing "donuts" while speeding.

"As the deputy entered the intersection in an attempt to warn other drivers on the road of the potential danger and initiate a traffic stop, the suspect vehicle is believed to have intentionally collided into the deputy’s patrol vehicle," the department said.

After ramming into the patrol car again, the "deputy-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was ultimately detained and taken into custody."

The man was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. No deputies were injured.

Florence and Eastern avenues were closed as officers conducted an investigation.

The offramps leading to eastbound Florence Avenue from the northbound and southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway were also closed, City News Service reported.
