Manhattan Beach is looking to hold its water a little longer.

The beach city is overhauling a part of its stormwater drainage system –
under the current system, rainwater that gets diverted from the 28th Street storm drain sits there until it gets released into the ocean and creates a flood risk. Officials said that the new system would slowly see the water be moved back into local soil.

Manhattan Beach officials said it will also improve conditions at the beach, help marine life, and cut down on the trash and bacteria that are getting into the ocean.

The project is still in the design phase, but it’s expected to start sometime this summer.

While the project is constructed, a couple blocks of Manhattan Ave. will be closed down for a year and a half.
