Based on the Liu Cixin novel, The Three-Body Problem, the eight-episode drama series from creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo will bend the minds of viewers with layered mysteries and high stakes genre-bending.
The plot centers around a decision made by main character Ye (played by Zine Tseng and Rosalind Chao) in 1960s China that “reverberates across space and time into the present day,” according to the series description.
“The hardest part of playing Ye was that she has these emotions, but she contains them,” Chao said of her character. “She contains them more than anyone else. You watch her face when tragedy has befallen her and she has to disguise it, otherwise she then becomes a victim and that continues throughout her life.”
While the bulk of the story centers around Ye and the five scientists making earth-shattering discoveries surrounding her fateful decision, the story is enhanced by other key characters including Wade, the charismatic leader of the world’s most elite intelligence operation played by Liam Cunningham, who works with Da Chi, an ex-intelligence officer with an unorthodox style of tradecraft played by Benedict Wong.

“He’s in charge of saving the world,” Cunningham said of Wade, before detailing how he and Wong’s characters work together. “If you put somebody in that position, you want them to be effective for the enemy that we’re up against. You need somebody who is driven and effective and gets things done and this team is very effective” he said, pointing to Wong.
With a strong base of characters and a thrilling, yet relatable storyline, the series is unlike any other and according to the stars, there’s one message they hope to spread.
“I hope people learn an empathy of their fellow man and also learn that all their actions have a ripple effect,” summarized Chao. “I hope people learn how to work together when facing adversity.”
Added Cunningham, “It’s set in present day. It’s not spandex, one-piece suits and that sort of thing... It’s a human story and [based on] what would we actually do? And would it keep us together? Will it divide the human race? And the threat of that is if the human race gets divided we all will fall. The only way we are going to survive is if we work together.”
