LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Coronavirus cases surged for a second day, with the Los Angeles County Public Health Department reporting 8,633 new COVID-19 cases Thursday. Numbers have more than doubled from this time last week, when the department reported just 2,275 new cases on Dec. 16.
The number of confirmed cases has continued to go up, doubling in just one day from Tuesday into Wednesday. A total of 6,509 new cases were reported Wednesday, which the Department of Public Health characterized as one of the steepest single-day spikes reported over the course of the pandemic.

In addition to a large number of new cases, health officials reported 24 new deaths, 770 current hospitalizations and more than 15% of people tested, testing positive for the virus. To date, there have been more than 1.5 million cases and more than 27,000 deaths reported in L.A. county.
The county has warned that unvaccinated residents are most vulnerable to infection from Omicron and are advising all eligible residents to get their vaccine or booster shots.
