A new poll revealed that more than half of Californians have had it with crime and will vote to repeal part of Proposition 47.

The poll was conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies in conjunction with the Los Angeles Times.

Mark DiCamillo, the director of the poll, told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener that people want to get tough on crime again.

“The ‘yes’ side is getting 56%. Just 23% are intending to vote no,” he said. “So it has a fairly large lead. That's a 33-point lead.  Even with the large undecided, that's more than enough that it needs for passage.”

He added that he’s not surprised by the results.

“I think really what's going on is there's just been a lot of visibility about these retail theft crimes where people can see these smash-and-grab things,” he said. “That really doesn't sit well with voters.  I think that's probably what's driving a lot of it. They just want that kind of activity stopped.”

Proposition 36, which will be on the upcoming November ballot, will make changes to Proposition 47, including toughening charging and sentencing laws for certain drug crimes.
