STUDIO CITY, Calif. (KNX) — A number of mudslides shutdown areas in Coldwater Canyon Thursday, as heavy rains continued across the Southern California region. As of 12:30 p.m. the area has been essentially shut down to for at least four hours between Ventura Boulevard and Mulholland Drive.

“We’re getting a lot of saturation and we have some soil movement that’s blocking the street access. So one, is making sure we have access to provide services to the citizens," said Battalion Chief Joe Lopez with the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

"And two, the bigger problem is we have some good soil movement that we can’t control.”

Firefighters said they're hoping the rain will let up in the next few hours so things will calm down and they can get to work clearing the roadways.

Lopez said the super-saturated hillsides are letting go as the rain continues, causing them to drop and stream mud and debris down the surrounding streets.
