The Murrieta Valley school board will consider a policy change this week that, if implemented, would force teachers to tell parents if their children identify as transgender.

The agenda for Thursday’s school board meeting includes copies of a similar policy adopted last month by the Chino Valley Unified School District, which requires school staff to notify parents in writing if their student asks to use a name, pronouns, or bathroom that don’t align with the sex listed on their birth certificate.

Murrieta Valley school board President Paul Diffley described the Chino Valley policy “an interesting guide,” the Press-Enterprise reports.

State Attorney General Rob Bonta has already announced an investigation into Chino Valley’s new rule, which he says “threatens the safety and well-being of LGBQ+ students.” California Department of Education guidelines say that disclosing a student’s transgender identity without permission may violate state antidiscrimination laws and constitutional privacy rights.

The Murrieta Valley school board will discuss the proposed policy change during their next meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
