California lawmakers continue to push legislation aimed at protecting kids from social media, despite legal setbacks.
A new bill – Protecting Our Kids from Social Media Addiction Act – introduced by Sen. Nancy Skinner, a Democrat from Berkeley, would stop push notifications from being sent to kids at night or during school hours. It would also give parents control over whether a social media platform can send ads to keep kids on phones.

Another bill – California Children’s Data Privacy Act – authored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, a Democrat in Oakland, would force businesses to get parental approval before they can collect, use, sell, or share the data for kids under 13.
Tech companies have successfully argued that similar proposals violate free speech.
