Drivers in California could earn up to $400 in gift cards to test a gas tax alternative.

California’s Road Charge “is an alternative funding mechanism that allows drivers to support road and highway maintenance based on how many miles they drive, instead of how many gallons of gas they use,” according to its website.

Two test pilot programs are being considered. One would be a flat per-mile rate, while the other would be a custom rate based on the vehicle's fuel efficiency.

Drivers who participate will either need to take a picture of their odometer, have a device installed that logs miles, or install a device that tracks where you drive, according to CBS News.

The program is looking for 800 volunteers to pay the mileage-based fee every month.

Those who participate will get credit for gas taxes or EV registration fees paid to avoid being double-taxed.

In order to get the $400 in gift cards participants must do the following:

$100: Enroll in the Pilot and complete the first survey

$100: Complete the second survey at the end of the Pilot

$200: Pay your road charges every month for 6 months
