Online petition underway to save mural on Bellflower business

BELLFLOWER, Calif. (KNX) – An online petition is underway to save a mural in Bellflower.

The mural, painted on the front of Speedy Auto Tint on Woodruff Avenue, was painted by an artist who goes by the name sloe_motions on Instagram and features notable Los Angeles figures Kobe Bryant, Vin Scully, Tupac, and Snoop Dogg.

The petition said the city wants the mural taken down.

“The City of Bellflower wants us to take down this beautiful artwork because it is facing a main street instead of being located on a wall facing a side street,” Robert Cornejo wrote.

Cornejo added they are in the process of appealing the code enforcement. As of Thursday, the petition has more than 1,650 signatures.

In a caption under a photo of the mural on Instagram, sloe_motions said that the government shouldn’t have an effect on people’s art.

“I’m tired of cities tryna (sic) stop artist(s) and make things hard on us when are the ones giving inspiration to the community’s (sic) n giving back in a real way,” he wrote.

Celebrities such as Oscar De La Hoya and Danny Trejo have expressed support for the mural.

“Thank you brother for the love,” De La Hoya commented. “I’ll make some calls.”

Trejo shared the photo of the mural on his Instagram page, writing, “Go check it out before the city removes it!”

The mayor of Bellflower said in a statement to KNX News that while they do not object to the content of the mural it does violates city code and they are actively seeking an appropriate solution.
