Fireworks are illegal in the city of Pasadena, but that didn’t stop countless residents from lighting them up for Independence Day.

KNX News’ Emily Valdez tagged along with a team of Pasadena police officers on Tuesday night as they tried to catch perpetrators in the act.

“They’re really patrolling the city for high areas where we receive complaints for fireworks,” Fire Chief Chad Augustin said. “First offense is $250, up to a $1,000 administrative citation, and that’s just if we catch you with fireworks.”

There’s a good reason for the restriction: fireworks are a serious safety hazard. Officers responded to a call Tuesday night about a palm tree that had been set ablaze. The fire department took care of the flames before they spread, and the person responsible was hit with a citation.

“I was just scared that my apartment was gonna go up in flames,” a neighbor said.

If you have any leftover fireworks from the holiday weekend, think twice before setting them off, especially if you live in one of the many areas of Southern California where fireworks are illegal.
