A man is hospitalized after being shot by officers outside the Olympic Police Station.
It happened just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
A police spokesman says the man walked up to the station near the intersection of 11th Street and Vermont Avenue, and asked to speak to an officer.
Because the lobby is closed due to COVID-19, an officer went out to meet the man, and allegedly spotted a handgun.
The officer called for backup, and shots were fired.
The man, who initially asked to speak to an officer, did not fire any shots.
He was taken to the hospital. His condition is not known. A handgun was recovered from outside the police station.
LAPD Chief Michel Moore says it happened a little after 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when a man walked in and asked to talk to an officer.
"As he spoke with this individual, this individual appeared to be, this individual's speech seemed to be incoherent. And the officer observed what he believed, what the officer believed to be a gun, a hand gun. A semiautomatic handgun," Moore says.
Moore says one officer fired one shot.
The suspect was hit and taken to a hospital. The chief says an apparent gun has been found on the ground where the man was shot.
Pete Demetriou, who is at the scene, is reporting there is no indication of anybody being hit or wounded or died at the scene.
"There’s been an Officer-Involved Shooting in the area of 11th Street and Vermont Avenue within LAPD’s Olympic Division. A Public Information Officer is responding to the scene, and we will provide more details as they become available," LAPD said on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.
