Speaking with Australia’s Double J about his upcoming shows down under with The Smile featuring guitarist Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner, Yorke was asked if he had any kind of news to share regarding new music from his and Greenwood's little band, Radiohead.
“I am not aware of it and don’t really give a flying f***,” Yorke said plainly. “No offence to anyone and thanks for caring. But I think we’ve earned the right to do what makes sense to us without having to explain ourselves or be answerable to anyone else’s historical idea of what we should be doing.”
“I don’t think we feel the need to live up to anything,” he adds of Radiohead’s legacy. “That feels like a non-problem. We are in this privileged position where we are still able to make music because of Radiohead, so no complaints.”
Fans can perhaps take solace in statements made by Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood, who recently told NME the band got together for rehearsals in their OK Computer studio over the summer, “just for a couple of days,” where they, “ran through all the songs and picked up where we left off in 2018.” Colin continued, “It was really fun and nice to see everyone. We were going to do three or four days but knocked it on the head after two because it was fine and we could still do it. My brother [Jonny Greenwood] said that we’d just need a couple of weeks rehearsal and we could go on the road, no problem.”
“Beyond that get together,” he explained, “I’m sure we’ll get together and make plans – but for what, I don’t know.” Asked about those sessions specifically, Yorke simply said, “I don’t think I have anything to add to that.”
Thom Yorke, ever-expanding his musical footprint, will orchestrate a number of his Radiohead songs for a cast of 20 musicians and actors for stage performances of Hamlet next spring, titled Hamlet Hail to the Thief, featuring the iconic Shakespeare text displayed alongside reworked selections from the band's 2003 release.
