With just around 24 hours warning, Southern California Edison told residents along the Portuguese Bend landslide complex in Rancho Palos Verdes that they will lose power indefinitely. This was confirmed by City Manager Ara Mihranian.

Nataly Tavidian of KNX News spoke with residents in the area Saturday.

“I’ve been going to these community meetings. I heard Southern California reps say they’ll do their best to give residents a warning and enough time,” said Tim Kelly, one of the residents in 135 homes in the area that have been without gas for the last month.

Earlier this week, Southern California Edison shared that it was “closely monitoring the dynamic conditions of the landslide and its effect on neighboring communities and its’ infrastructure.” It also said people in the area could expect road closures, overnight work or emergency outages “intended to preserve the integrity of community safety and the electric grid.”

As the slow-moving landslide in the area picks up pace, it is continuously creating stress points on the electrical grid, SCE explained. SCE, the city of Rancho Palos Verdes and other community stakeholders are seeking solutions to disruptions in the area.

“Please note that emergency work may be necessary on the weekends in order to keep your community safe,” said SCE.
