Lanterns along Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood are glowing purple for a good cause.

In recognition of Domestic Violence and Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month, globes along the busy boulevard will glow purple to raise awareness. The city hopes to spotlight intimate partner violence that occurs not only in same-gender relationships, but in the LGBTQ community as well.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:

- One in four women and one in nine men experience physical violence by an intimate partner

- 43.8% of lesbian women and 61.1% of bisexual women reported rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner

- 26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men said they’ve encountered rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner

- Nationwide, domestic violence hotlines answer more than 20,000 phone calls each year
