Rescue crews located a boat lost in thick fog near the Santa Monica Pier and escorted it to safety last week, authorities said.
Santa Monica police said officers with the Pier and Harbor services responded to a mayday call over marine radio from the 24-foot vessel just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Harbor Services Officers spotted the boat near the surf zone in Venice Beach, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. After reaching the boat near the Santa Monica-Venice border, first responders steered it to safety through the dense sea smog.
“The owner and solo occupant of the 24’ powerboat reported being lost in dense fog near the southern end of the Santa Monica city limits and in danger of running aground in the surf break,” the department explained in a press release.
Officers led the boat to the Marina del Rey area where crews with the L.A. County Lifeguard Baywatch jumped in to assist.
The department says officers used a 30′ Seaway Rescue Boat with a GPS, radar, and “a radio directional finder to assist in search and rescue missions in limited visibility” to pinpoint the boat.
