A tundra bean goose, typically found in Siberia, has been captured in South Los Angeles.
KNX News’ Emily Valdez reported that the bird was shot with a BB gun, most likely when it was in the Antelope Valley. She spoke to Debbie McGuire, from the Huntington Beaches, Wetlands and Wildlife care centers, about the rare sighting.
“It has a dark beak with that orange stripe around it,” McGuire said. “You know, they’re very pretty actually.”
The bird was noticed limping, with a droop in one of its wings, she said.
“It’s been concerning that it didn’t migrate out of the area,” McGuire added.
State wildlife officials asked if she could send a team out to capture the goose. When the bird was captured, McGuire’s team X-rayed it and found a healed fracture in the wing. They also found a BB pellet right next to the bone, she said.
If the arctic goose can’t be released back into the wild, it will go to a bird sanctuary in Louisiana.
This is only the second Tundra Bean Goose found this far south, McGuire said.
Maybe the goose can achieve similar celebrity status as the Central Park duck…only time will tell.
