The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a brush fire in Malibu Thursday afternoon that sent one firefighter to the hospital.

The small blaze ignited shortly after 12:30 p.m. in the 24000 block of Piuma Road, west of Saddle Peak, burning heavy brush. Light winds of about five miles an hour contributed to the spread, according to the LACFD.

One firefighter has been hospitalized after suffering “heat-related injuries'' on the scene.

Both paid and inmate firefighters comprised the crew, though a spokesperson for the LACFD said he did not believe the injured crew member was incarcerated.

By 1:30 p.m., LACFD’s Lost Hills Station reported the fire’s forward progress had been halted.

The temperature today in Malibu Hills was 85 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
