2 dead after small plane crashes and catches fire at Van Nuys Airport

Two people are dead after a single-engine plane crashed and caught fire at Van Nuys Airport on Wednesday, firefighters said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to 16303 W Waterman Drive at 10:37 a.m.

"Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames, but, sadly, both occupants on board were found to be deceased," LAFD said.

The airport was shut down following the crash but did reopen for general aviation, according to ABC-7.

"A single-engine CSA SportCruiser crashed at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles around 10:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday, August 2," the Federal Aviation Administration said, adding that they and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
