On Monday, SoCalGas shut off the natural gas service to a couple of neighborhoods in Rancho Palos Verdes.
The shutoff happened around 9 a.m. and is expected to be shut off indefinitely.
“Due to worsening land movement, SoCalGas has determined it is unsafe to continue providing natural gas service to approximately 135 homes in the Portuguese Bend Community in Rancho Palos Verdes,” according to a statement by SoCalGas.
Residents were notified of the shutoff on Friday.
“The City of Rancho Palos Verdes has repeatedly requested that SoCalGas provide residents with more time to prepare for the service shutoff,” city officials wrote in an update on Sunday.
A man who lives a mile away in Seaview told KNX News’ Jon Baird he also believes residents weren’t given enough time.
“I guess, I don't know enough about what happened there but feels like people are gonna be left switching appliances on a short notice. So that's not great,” he said. “For something to happen so abruptly and again, that's the big complaint.”
SoCalGas announced it would give customers impacted by the shutoff $2,500.
“We know this is difficult for the community, especially given the current uncertainty about future natural gas service and the continued land movement,” said SoCalGas Senior Vice President and Chief Infrastructure Officer, Rodger Schwecke. “We want to help our customers meet some of their immediate needs, whether that’s laundry or meals, or to help residents with longer term appliance choices.”
