Signal Hill Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by a police officer in the 1000 block of Willow Street on Monday afternoon.
The shooting happened at 12:56 p.m., following reports of a stabbing at a popular grocery store in the area, The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. LASD’s homicide unit is assisting SHPD with the investigation.
The altercation between an officer and the suspect, described only as a Hispanic man, happened when the officer saw a man who met the suspect description walking in the area of the reported stabbing, according to investigators.
The suspect refused to comply and began to threaten the officer with a large knife, prompting the officer to fire at least one time during the attack. The suspect was shot once in the upper torso. He was taken to the hospital and later died of his injuries. The officer was not injured.
The victim of the grocery store stabbing suffered one stab wound to his upper torso and was taken to the hospital in fair condition, according to investigators.
The relationship between the victim and the suspect is not known. LASD said the stabbing does not appear to be gang related.
Willow Street was closed for several hours during the investigation. It has since been reopened.
