A man who was allegedly breaking into cars was stabbed to death on USC’s Greek Row on Monday night.

It happened just after 8 p.m. in a narrow walkway in the 700 block of West 28th St.

The suspected car thief was described as a man in his 30s and believed to be homeless, according to multiple reports.

A 19-year-old USC student witnessed the suspected thief breaking into a car and confronted him, police said. This led to the suspected thief being stabbed.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im told City News Service that the suspected thief was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man accused of the stabbing was taken into custody.

A student who lives near the walkway and was home at the time of the stabbing spoke with KNX News’ Karen Adams.

“So I was with my friends upstairs on the roof and we noticed the police were here with the fraternity next to us,” he said. “So we were wondering what happened and then all of a sudden they began to put the warning tapes out and we were wondering like, ‘What was going on? Why were they doing this?’ And then all of a sudden, the police came and told us that we should all stay inside that apparently there had been a stabbing.”

A woman who lives in the area said there had been a significant increase in homelessness in the last few weeks.

“I mean, based on the number of homeless individuals that you see on the street, and I wanna say it's been within like the last 23 weeks,” she said.

It’s unclear if the man who was taken into custody will be facing any charges.
