A 17-year-old boy was apprehended after allegedly evading law enforcement in South Los Angeles, police announced Friday.

Officers arrived at 70th and Main streets on June 30 about 10:30 p.m. to conduct a "crime suppression" operation due to a surge in violent crime, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

At the location, vehicles were double-parked, and several bystanders were standing in the roadway, consuming alcoholic beverages and smoking marijuana.

This prompted the officers to exit their vehicle and warn individuals to disperse from the area and to stop smoking and drinking in public.

"While warning the group, officers observed a male subject, later identified as being 17 years old, sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle double-parked in front of 133 West 70th Street. When the subject saw the officers, he appeared surprised, grabbed an unknown object, leaned forward, and secreted the item under the vehicle's front passenger seat," police said in a statement.

The officers instructed the suspect to exit the vehicle. Although the teen initially complied, he suddenly fled on foot, prompting a pursuit, police said.

The teen was later subdued after officers deployed a Taser to apprehend him, police said.

Two officers were taken to a hospital for injuries sustained during the arrest and were later released.

The teenager was also taken to a hospital for treatment and later released and booked at the Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall on suspicion of battery on a police officer with serious bodily injury.
