FREMONT, Calif. (KCBS) — Fremont police are investigating the "suspicious" death of a person found at the Tesla factory parking lot on Monday afternoon as a homicide, officials said on Monday.
The Fremont Police Department said in a release that firefighters responded to reports of a "subject down" at 3:26 p.m. Firefighters declared the person dead after providing medical aid, handing over the investigation to the police department's homicide investigators.
Police officials didn't provide any information about the person, how they died or who found them. The department's public information office didn’t respond to KCBS Radio’s request for comment prior to publication on Monday, nor did its investigations unit.
It’s not clear if the person worked for Tesla. The automaker didn’t respond to KCBS Radio’s request for comment seeking clarification on how the company learned of the person’s death and whether someone with Tesla called for a response. Neither Tesla nor founder Elon Musk, who was named Time magazine’s "Person of the Year" earlier on Monday, had offered public comment on the person’s death as of press time.
Tesla's Fremont plant has previously faced internal and external criticism for overworking and mistreating workers. An arbitrator in August awarded a former Black employee over $1 million in a discrimination lawsuit, while a woman working at the plant filed a lawsuit in November alleging "rampant sexual harassment."
