SAN DIEGO (KNX) — A trucker from Mexico was arrested after he was caught attempting to smuggle “record-breaking amounts” of fentanyl and methamphetamine into the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Officials said 17,584 pounds of meth and 389 pounds of fentanyl were seized from inside Carlos Martin Quintana-Arias’ tractor-trailer on Thursday at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the both amounts would the largest seizures of each drug in the entire U.S. in 2020 or 2021.

Quintana-Arias, a resident of Mexico, faces federal drug charges. He was arraigned in a federal court on Nov. 19 on two counts of importation of a controlled substance.

In his manifest, both an X-ray machine and a drug-sniffing dog detected “anomalies” in the trailer, the complaint revealed.
