A month after Tustin’s historic blimp hangar went up in flames, homeowners in the area continue to be impacted.
When the fire first started, residents had to come to terms with the historic hangar disappearing. Then, asbestos was found in the air with all the ash and debris. Schools in the area had to shut down and residents were recommended to wear masks.
The blaze officially ended on Dec. 1. Orange County Supervisors had to approve an emergency declaration for state and federal resources as the historic building burned.
Tustin officials began the removal of the hangars’ 120-foot doors on Dec. 7 and asked for help from the federal government to complete the process. The U.S. Navy, who owns the hangars, will finish the remainder of the cleanup.
Now, the tax assessor in Orange County is reporting that property values in the area are going down because of damage to the homes.
To help aid homeowners impacted by this, the assessor said that any property that suffered over $10,000 in damage may be eligible for a temporary value adjustment. The application can be found at www.ocassessor.gov/page/property-damage.
