A Friday night football game at Valencia High School against Saugus High School was canceled after three more COVID-19 cases were confirmed on the VHS campus. The football team said the cases involved at least some members of the Vikings football team.

“This week has been a tough week for all of us in the Valencia High School community,” the team said in a Facebook post, adding that the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health decided to cancel the game for the safety of the athletes, coaches and spectators from across the Santa Clarita Valley.

Under the district’s COVID-19 rules, the game will be listed as a forfeit by VHS.

“We realize this is a difficult time for our school community and we want to assure you that all safety protocols and regulations are being followed,” the team continued.

The three new cases bring the total number of confirmed cases at the school to 36 so far. The school said all of the cases have been “epidemiologically linked,” according to the LADPH, which means they are all connected.

A majority of the infections have been found among members of the cheerleading squad, Vice Principal Pete Getz said in an email earlier this week. The squad has been shut down until the outbreak is under control, the William S. Hart Union High School District told CBS L.A.

The school’s football field — Dr. Paul Priesz Stadium, and all surrounding areas and buildings will be closed Friday to undergo deep cleaning, according to the football team’s post.

Classes will continue as normally scheduled on Friday.
