
A car attempted to gain unauthorized access to Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Calif., Friday evening at, according to the Marine Corps Base Twitter.
CBS News reported that video posted to social media depicted a “car engulfed in flames and suffering considerable damage to the front end of the vehicle after colliding with the barrier.”
“We can confirm at approximately 6:30 p.m. there was an attempt to gain unauthorized access to the installation,” said the Camp Pendleton tweet. “The MCB Camp Pendleton Provost Marshall Office deployed the final denial barriers and disabled the vehicle. We will provide further information when available.”
An update posted around 20 minutes later said that the gate had reopened for traffic.
According to the base website, Camp Pendleton is the Marine Corps’ largest West Coast expeditionary training facility. It includes more than 125,000 acres of terrain located approximately 82 miles south of Los Angeles.
“Camp Pendleton is one of the Department of Defense’s busiest installations and offers a broad spectrum of training facilities for many active and reserve Marine, Army and Navy units, as well as national, state and local agencies,” said the site.
“It was unclear who was behind the wheel or why they were attempting to gain access to the base,” said CBS News Friday.
