Wallows have been a part of our collective lives for a while now after getting started in 2017 and the arrival of their debut studio album, Nothing Happens, in 2019 -- also the year they made their first appearance at Coachella. In just a few years, which may seem like an eternity due to circumstances, they have given fans quite a bit more music, and a much more intimate look at themselves than expected.
LISTEN NOW: Wallows with Nicole Alvarez at Coachella 2022
Wallows members Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston joined Aucady's Nicole Alvarez backstage before their 2022 Coachella set for a quick chat about some of the differences they see looking back at their humble beginnings to today's festival stage. "We were very fortunate during the pandemic, we continued to work, we made an EP completely separate from each other, called 'Remote,' which was fun" explains Dylan. "We're happy we got that out of our system because we think it really helped our second album [Tell Me That It's Over] take shape, which just came out recently."
Dylan adds, "I think we're also lucky because we somehow managed to have a song do very well over the break. We had a lot of online growth while no one was doing anything. So, being here at Coachella is kind of interesting, because... to be playing out in the wild again out at a festival after a growth we couldn't see right in front of our eyes for a while, it's gonna be kind of interesting. We're curious to see if it feels any different or what it's gonna feel like."
"We're back in the arena," adds Cole, but being back in that arena at a major festival comes with all sorts of challenges. "If it's our own show there's less variables, less wild card things. Whereas here, the changeover is 20 minutes, we're cramming our stuff on stage really quickly, and people aren't necessarily here only to see Wallows. So, I'm not really nervous about performing, I don't think we are, it's more about.. 'how is it gonna go?'."
The best way to judge is, "if people have a good time and if we have a good time; I think that's pretty successful," Braeden adds. "No matter what happens 'technically,' if you're having fun on stage, people have fun in the audience," Cole agrees. As does Dylan, saying, "I'm already getting in the mindset of, 'just go and have fun, just go and play the best you can,' because I know how easy it is to get in your head... I just want to get up there and give it raw, complete energy and just hope for the best."
