Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has given fans an update regarding the band’s recorded catalog, saying their 12th album would be their final offering, leaving just two more to come after the release of Moon Music later this week.

“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Yeah, I promise,” Chris Martin said in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “Because less is more and, for some of our critics, even less would be even more,” he joked. “It’s really important that we have that limit.”

Comparing the band to other noteworthy accomplishments in film and music, Martin adds, “There’s only seven ‘Harry Potter’ [books]. There’s only 12-and-a-half Beatles albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes. Also, having that limit means the quality control is so high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great.”

That certainly doesn’t mean the band is resting on their laurels, as he says each of the group’s members are still “trying to improve,” without “coasting” through any of their current responsibilities. But a break from the rigors of rehearsals and recording will be welcome, indeed. “It’s such a lot of wrangling of people,” he says, in order to properly put something together that is up to the band’s high standards, “and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves.”

Fans can rest easy, however, once Coldplay retires from the album game, Chris says he plans to continue on making music. Plus, let's not forget about the Coldplay musical film that he said previously was in the works.

Coldplay’s 10th studio album, Moon Music, is set to drop on October 4. Pre-orders for the upcoming album -- which will set new standards for sustainability, with each LP made from 100% recycled plastic bottles (nine per record) -- are available now on EcoCD, EcoRecord LP, and digital download.
