Shinedown drummer Barry Kerch offers an update on the upcoming album: 'We'll never rush a record'

'We don't want to put stuff out there that we're not proud of'

Before Shinedown returns to the road in a few weeks, drummer Barry Kerch made a stop in the studio to talk with Camfield about the band's upcoming album, his passion project series called Boos, Brews, and BBQ, and what's next for the band on the road.

When asked to pin down a date for Shinedown's next album, Barry admits, "we have no idea if you want the truth. We'd like it to come out next March that's the hope, that's what we're shooting for, but it's not done yet and that's the thing. We'll never rush a record. We don't want to put stuff out there that we're not proud of."

Calling frontman Brent Smith a "consummate workaholic," Kerch shares, "we're constantly on the road. So it's hard to record songs and make a record when you're out there touring... It's not like it's a bad thing, but it takes a second."

"We always write a lot of songs and then pick the best ones for a record," reveals Barry. "It's the same with this one, but then you know, we started getting a different sound, not that we're changing it still sounds like Shinedown and we can't change Brent's voice nor would you want to, but just different production, maybe some different instrumentation. You're like, 'oh I guess we're headed this direction now,' so let's try this and try this and try this and, it puts you on a different creative path which is always fun."
