Are airlines going to start weighing passengers before flights?
Ok, so there are a lot of triggers involved in this one, from the jump.
Initially you think a few alarming things, or at least I did:
Are they singling out “big people”?
Are they trying to charge people more for weighing more?
Are they allowed to do that, or is it discrimination?
And then I read the article from NYPOST.com and as they report: The initiative, which was outlined in a recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory, strives to provide new data on average passenger weights as the current numbers reportedly don’t reflect today’s sky-high obesity rates in the US.
So the main objective, as they put it, would be that they want to “help ensure aircrafts, especially the small ones, don’t exceed their allowable weight limit.”
So what would it be then?
They would “establish an average weight” for passengers, then have a combination of asking the passengers their weight as well as physically having them step on scales to have employees “determine the actual weight of passengers.” (That’s my brief summation for you, but you can get the full details HERE).
It sounds like a lot and I don’t think people will be happy with it, on either side. Needless to say, feel free to weigh in on it though.
