“For someone struggling very openly, to put that on a stage and to offer it up for public consumption, I think is a very special type of courage and service that artists do,” said director Sabaah Folayan, according to Billboard. “[X] was open about his issues. He didn’t necessarily win his battle before we lost him, but he gave us a space to talk about mental health and his internal struggle.”
XXXTENTACION was shot and killed during an armed robbery in 2018 at the age of 20. Look at Me: XXXTENTACION reportedly features never-before-seen archival footage of the rapper. The documentary was originally commissioned by the Fader in 2017, and eventually premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival.
Born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, XXXTENTACION, catapulted from a polarizing SoundCloud artist to a Hip Hop superstar. X’s 2015 breakout song “Look At Me” became a Top 40 record and his debut album 17 reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Despite his popularity and success, X faced numerous legal charges including witness tampering, false imprisonment and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman. Billboard reports that he was facing up to 15 felony charges at the time of his death, which he pleaded not guilty.
Look at Me: XXXTENTACION will be available to stream on Hulu on May 26.
