Over 103,000 Americans need a life-saving organ, with over 1,700 in San Diego alone. 86% of patients waiting need a kidney, and living kidney donation can help reduce the number of individuals on the national transplant wait list. On average, 16 people die every day in the U.S. because there are not enough available organs, and every 8 minutes, another person is added to the transplant waiting list.

For over 30 years, Sharp HeathCare has led the way with its Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program, which has one of the highest survival rates in the country. Since 1990, they've performed over 2,400 kidney transplants, of which over 900 were from living kidney donors.

There are 615 people on Sharp HealthCare’s transplant wait list. Their hope is to give these individuals as many opportunities as possible for a donor match. Dr. Marquis Hart, a transplant surgeon for Sharp, discusses live kidney donation.
