After talking about the lack of dress code at Jelly's Goodnight Nashville bar, the CMA Award winner detailed the reasons for ditching his phone. It really came down to two key moments. The first at the Super Bowl when he was too busy on his phone to enjoy the moment. "When somebody scores a touchdown, and everybody else jumps up and starts high fiving. and I remember looking up and being like, 'oh, that's cool' and went right back to my mom and I was like, 'this ain't healthy,'" he reveals. The other was after winning an ACM Award, when he received a berating text for being unreachable. "I got 2000 unread messages here. I sit here and think about what all 2000 of these say or what they have to say about me... It was making me miserable."
Aside from people in his orbit having phones he can use, he now uses a laptop and communicates via email. "I email like it's 1998."
Jelly Roll also unpacked the story behind his hit, "Liar," as he faces his own inner monologue. "This song is just about standing up and being like, it's a lie," he shares. "Tell me I can't lose 150 pounds. That's a lie. You tell me I'm too far behind, nobody loses that much weight in their 40s. That's a lie. Tell me I can't learn the guitar in my late 30s. That's a lie. You know what I mean? Tell me I can't start my Country music career at 37. That's a lie."
"I am starting to have a clarity and understanding of what God is doing in my life in a way that I never have. Because the physical's finally matching the change that's happening inside. I am busting ass out here, dude. I'm gonna lose another 100 pounds right in front of everybody's eyes just like I just lost 150 in front of everybody's eyes, you know what I mean? Like it's fixing to happen."
