Friday (2/28/2021), the Governor’s office expanded the next phase of COVID vaccination process to include people under the age of 65 whose medical conditions make them extremely vulnerable to the coronavirus. But if you are under 65 without a medical condition and are chomping at the bit to get your stab in the arm, there may be a way for you to get your vaccination now while helping the community: Volunteering at a vaccination site. In addition to the new designation, Florida is still prioritizing those 65 and older, nursing home workers and frontline healthcare workers. And volunteering at a injection site would make you a frontline worker and therefore immediately eligible for a vaccine. While the injections themselves at the sites will need to be done by a licensed professionals, there are others needed to coordinate those eligible, monitor, schedule and direct. And with more vaccines available and locations coming online, there will be the need for more people to help. The first step is to let the Florida Department of Health know you are interested in helping. Email them at volunteers@flhealth.gov, or call (850) 245-4009 and be prepared for an on-boarding process that may take some time. Also be prepared to wait as the Health Department is a bit overwhelmed at the moment and you may be put on a waiting list or asked to call back later. But be persistent. In the next few weeks as it becomes clearer as to how many sites are to open and how many people are needed to work each site, you may hear back on where you are needed and begin your process (as well as your vaccine regime).
