Aside from being one of the creators of the series, alongside his producing partner Reza Fahim, and the brain behind Euphoria, Sam Levinson, The Weeknd will also be receiving acting credits, together with Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp and Elizabeth Berkley aka Jessie from Saved By The Bell. Other recognizable names from the cast list include Troye Sivan and Debby Ryan.
Set in the L.A. music industry, according to IMDb The Idol centers around “a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.” Hence the show name.
The teaser footage begins by announcing the project comes from “sick and twisted minds” of series co-creators Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Sam Levinson, then immediately takes us on a wild ride filled with Hollywood mansions, colorful drug-filled parties, and fast cars.
“Lick it. Spank it. Drop it,” a woman can be heard saying over scenes of Tesfaye punching the air and Depp surrounded by dancers, “More, more, more, orgy!” The women continues.
At one point during a dinner party scene, The Weeknd’s character ask, “why don’t you just be yourself,” directed at Depp’s character. “Because there’s nothing about me that’s relatable,” she bites back. And as if all that wasn't enticing enough, it's followed by promising, “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.” As those exact words flash across the screen.
The trailer concludes with intimate and intense interaction with who we assume to be Abel's character, asking Depp's, “Do you trust me?” Responding with a devilish smile, Depp's character says, “Not really.”
The Idol has not yet set a premiere date, but as the clip promises the series is “coming soon.” So for now check out the teaser below.
