Standardized testing is a challenge in the best of times, but what about during a pandemic?

Leading educators are calling on the government to delay or even cancel those student assessments for the time being.

From distance learning to social isolation, this past year has been a huge challenge for most students. Now, as many return to school, they are still being asked to do standardized testing.

That’s not a good idea in the middle of a pandemic, said Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association.

“So, we’re calling on state governments, as well as the U.S. Department of Education, to provide the kind of flexibility this year,” she told KCBS Radio.

Over 500 education researchers have signed a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona asking him to hold off on standardized testing this year.

Pringle said that instead, we should take this opportunity to reimagine those assessments, which have been accused of being racially biased.

“That’s what we need in this moment,” she added. “We’ve always needed it, but let’s take advantage of this moment and build those kind of assessment systems now.”
