Kamala Harris isn’t hoping things will return to normal – she wants something better than it was before.
In a conversation with Shilynne Cole on 97.1 QMG’s "The Girl Power Podcast", Harris talked about how she hopes things will return to a glorified state once the majority of the population is vaccinated.
When probed about the return to normalcy, Harris responded, “I actually am saying normal isn’t good enough, so let’s get back to better.”
When it comes to contracting the coronavirus, members of the Black community face much harsher prognoses than those of other ethnicities. Harris wants to make sure there’s equity in vaccine distribution. “Making sure that folks who have been left out will not be overlooked, and that we can give them an opportunity to catch up,” she said.
“We want everybody to end up in the same place, and for some folks, it’s going to require a little bit more assistance to catch up,” she continued. “Are we making sure that the resources are going to the people who need them most?”
Then, Harris went on to talk about her own experience with getting the vaccine, prefacing her experience with, “First of all, I am so proud to have received a vaccine that was created, among others, by a Black woman.”
She continued to outline her experience, explaining, “It was relatively painless and really quick. It’s just like getting a flu shot, right?”
Harris then spoke about the benefits of getting the vaccine – like gaining the ability to gather in small groups with people who are also fully vaccinated. “The benefit of getting vaccinated is not only that it’ll save your life…but the CDC just yesterday came out with guidelines that if you’re vaccinated, you can gather indoors in small gatherings with fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask. How about that?” she said.
She then reiterated that getting the vaccine means your life can return to some form of normalcy. “If you get vaccinated, you know, life starts opening back up a little bit,” she said.
Harris encourages others to get the vaccine as well, saying, “We each have the power that, when it’s our turn, to get our vaccine. So let’s own our power and get the vaccine.”
And for those who are skeptical, Harris has one message. “Oh, but you must get the vaccine. If you have the power to save your life…you must get the vaccine. It is your right to be healthy. It is your right to take advantage of the science, and it is safe,” she said.
She left the interview with a message of hope. “Get your vaccine when it is your turn. It will save your life,” Harris said.
