There’s a time and a place for everything, and blocking a major thoroughfare is not the place at any time for activism, according to Newell Normand.
The WWL host used his Tuesday broadcast as the time and place to call out protesters in San Francisco who blocked the Golden Gate Bridge and caused tremendous financial hardship for the people just trying to get to their jobs.
“We’ve got a bunch of left wing activists that are really taking the San Francisco D.A. to task… calling it a political stunt,” Normand said about the decision to prosecute those protesters.
“The Golden Gate Bridge District that day, that one day, lost $162,000 in revenue,” he continued. “And they held up the movement of an estimated 20,000 vehicles for hours on end. People missing work didn't get paid.
People missing their flights didn't get reimbursed. Doctors missing their medical appointments. Patients missing their medical appointments. Doctors having to reschedule surgery. A whole lot of this.”
Normand said he hopes the official record eventually reflects that the disrupters pay a penalty.
“History books will remember this,” he said. “I hope they do. I hope they remember that we convict the 26 individuals. I also hope that they remember that we should have them pay restitution, at the very least, to the bridge for losing $162,000 in revenue.”
