PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Drexel University women's basketball team has enjoyed a tremendous season to this point.

After a 63-60 road win over Towson on Sunday, the Dragons sit at 21-7 on the season, and they are tied for first in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 14-2 league mark.

The Dragons are led by senior forward Bailey Greenberg, who is winding down an incredible career.

“I've had a lot of fun,” Greenberg said. “It's mainly been because of the girls on the team this year. Every year I've really liked everyone, but this year we've really seemed to click. It really started all back in Greece when we got to take our foreign tour, and now it's all really coming together, which is super nice.”

Greenberg came to Drexel after starring at Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster.

“It's close to home,” she said of the decision to play at Drexel. “I really love my family; they all come out and support. My mom and dad don't miss a game, along with so many of my aunts, uncles and cousins.

“Friends are close. It's local; I can get home really easy. Then also, the coaching staff was a huge reason, and I'm so happy because everything has paid off with that.”

Greenberg scored 20 points — a team high — in Sunday's win, which upped her career point total to 1,713. She is now sitting third in program history.

This season, she leads the team in scoring with a 17.3 points per game average, and she is hitting 39% of her shots from three. She said versatility has been a key to her offensive success in college.

“I've learned to shoot the three,” she said. “(Drexel assistant coach) Amy Mallon worked with me since I got in the door Day 1, and she's really gotten me confident shooting the three, and now I feel so comfortable with it.

“Just from a young age, my dad told me I had to be able to do everything, so I worked on being a post. I'm like a 'tweener' — I am a post player, I'm not really a guard, but I'm undersized as a post. So learning post moves at a young age definitely helped me and learning to attack the basket. Then as well, I have a hook shot I got from my brother because he always used to block me. So having other moves and being able to read my defender has helped me.”

There is still work to do this season, but Greenberg's time playing basketball at Drexel is drawing to a close.

“I always just think about my teammates,” she remembered fondly. “I've had so much fun with them this year. And my coaches, they're awesome. So that will definitely be the thing I remember most looking back. I even see some of my teammates who've graduated and we'll talk about the times we played together and the times off the court.

“All the relationships I've made at Drexel, I'm so grateful for. I don't think I would've gotten the same relationships if I went anywhere else.”

Greenberg and the Dragons return to action on Thursday night with a home game against the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
