PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — People can do strange things when winter turns frigid — like, for instance, look for ice instead of warmth.
Even in the Philly suburbs, there is a hearty breed that enjoys cutting a hole in the ice and squatting over it for hours. They're called ice fisherman, and a prime location for their day-trip getaway is Montgomery County's Green Lane Reservoir.
Between the fresh air and the outdoors, fishermen say it's a gorgeous time of year to pull trout through the ice.
In recent years of warmer winter temperatures, we've seen more golfers than ice anglers. The ice must be 5 inches thick, and that takes sustained subfreezing weather.
But when it arrives, you can join the cold craving crew at Green Lane and other area state park lakes to drop a line for a fresh winter catch. Before you go, check online or call the parks for a status report.
