PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Food and Drug Administration approved its first COVID-19 test on March 12, and as of this report, we now have 166 separate tests available.

There are also at least 15 FDA tests that are approved for use at home. These tests are shipped to your home and specimens can be obtained relatively easily by a swab in your nose or simply spitting into a test tube. You can send them back to the lab in a prepaid expedited shipping envelope.

But there are still issues. The first is that you need to see if certain tests are available in your state, and it can vary widely even in neighboring states.

I also strongly suggest that you make certain you have a test approved by the FDA. you can call your local health department for a recommendation.

In case you are wondering, most of these tests are very reliable. However, a false negative test can occur as often as twenty percent of the time.
