PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Based on information from the American Heart Association and a new report in the journal Circulation, four grams of fish oil supplements can lower triglycerides by as much as 30 percent among people who require treatment for elevated triglycerides.

They further recommend that the supplements should be considered after any underlying causes, such as a diet and lifestyle strategies are implemented. But the AHA says its position addresses only prescription fish oil supplements, not the wide variety of over-the-counter supplements.

The AHA withheld an endorsement of over-the-counter products because dietary supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids are not regulated by the FDA.
