PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There are two types of blood tests for COVID-19: serology and viral.
Today, I will focus on serology tests — a blood test that looks for evidence of someone's prior infection.
The test provides evidence that someone may have been exposed to the virus in the past, potentially, even if they did not have symptoms.
The way a serology test works is by looking at antibodies to the virus.
It's important to note that this test does not diagnose an active infection or who is protected by immunity. Also, the FDA does not evaluate these tests prior to use, which is why there is so much debate over their value.
