PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — About 13 percent of new mothers experience depression in the months after childbirth.

It's known as postpartum depression, and many women recover from this. However, for some mothers, depression can become a lasting problem.

Researchers at Harvard University reviewed 23 studies on women with postpartum depression and found that of the 13 percent who suffer from postpartum depression, 30 to 50 percent of them can have serious depression for months, and even years, after giving birth.

Therefore, it's important to discuss any concerns with your doctor.
