PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia has been in the “yellow” phase for a couple weeks now. You can eat at restaurants, but only those that offer outdoor dining, per coronavirus-related restrictions.

But what exactly is the proper etiquette for post-quarantine dining?

The first thing you want to do is make a reservation.

“They don't want lines of people out the door,” said Ben Fileccia, director of operations and strategy for the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association. “You don't want to see big groups of people crowding around.”

The world has definitely changed over the past few months, so if you see a friend pass by your outdoor table, typical greetings should be avoided.

“No high-fiving, no more handshakes. I don't even do elbow bumps much anymore,” Fileccia said. “One of the chefs gave me a foot tap.”

It’s OK to invite a friend to join you, but be cautious.

“Since everything in Philly is outside and on the sidewalks, you want to make sure that there's a path for people to walk by — or, your butt's not out in traffic,” he joked.

And while you may feel inclined to stretch the meal and linger with friends, remember: Restaurants now have a smaller capacity.

“The restaurants need you to eat, to enjoy yourself, and then to get the heck out,” he added.

As for face coverings, you must wear a mask anytime you're not at your table.

“Don't be super judgy if you see somebody not wearing a mask,” Fileccia advised. “There might be a reason for that, but feel free to ask the manager. One thing not to do is to go on social media and say, ‘Hey, I saw so and so not wearing a mask.’ ”

And remember, all these rules and regulations are new not just for customers, but for servers.

“These servers are front-line workers,” Fileccia said, “so just be kind to them.”
