PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The fourth annual International Unity Cup game will take place Saturday at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester. The World Cup-style soccer tournament is the brainchild of Mayor Jim Kenney, and he's hoping it will become an institution.

The Unity Cup started in 2016 with 36 teams. It grew to 48 teams in 2017 and 56 last year, where it remains, as countries take each other on for bragging rights.

Every year, West African teams have dominated, but other countries have gotten better. On Saturday, Team Liberia will take on Team USA.

Kenney pondered on the game's outcome.

"I love the Liberians," he said. "I'd like to see a little country diversity, but the Liberians are good."

Kenney, a huge soccer fan, came up with the idea for the tournament to highlight the diversity of the city's immigrant population and showcase Parks and Recreation facilities. He said it's a low-cost way to bring people together.

Since then, cities like Chicago, Pittsburgh and Boston have all inquired on how to get it done.

"If there were five or six cities and we could take the winner of each city and have an additional tournament, that would be great," he said.

Kenney won the primary last May and is the Democratic candidate for the November election, so he's hoping to use the next four years to solidify the Unity Cup into the fabric of Philadelphia.

Unity Cup festivities kick off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, with a 6 p.m. championship game time.
